What is a Bato bucket system?

The Bato bucket system has been used for donkeys years commercially as it is probably one of the easiest hydroponic systems. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, it is also known as a “dutch pot“.

Basically it is a pot drip-fed from the top which flushes the medium then leaves through the bottom back into a reservoir system and is then recirculated

Actions-ok-icon (2)It is a ideal system for larger grows
Actions-ok-icon (2)Great for larger plants
Actions-ok-icon (2)Very simple to make and use
Actions-ok-icon (2)Adaptable for use with a variety of mediums from just hydro pebbles for a constantly fed system to a highly retentive medium such as vermiculite and coco for those who wish to water less frequently.

Advantages of a Bato/dutch pot system for growing cannabis:

  • easy to build and install
  • Low cost if you do decide to build your own
  • can adapt to many different styles of growing
  • capable of growing large plants with stability
  • years of proven professional use in the general horticultural area
  • can be built to accommodate any size grow room whatever the shape

Disadvantages of a Bato system:

  • basically there are a lot of connection and join points and therefore there a lot of inherent weaknesses in the system for potential leakages: if knocked the drips have a habit of getting dislodged from the system and potentially flooding the grow room
  • when growing multiple varieties with different growth heights you cant adjust the heights of the pots to gain an even canopy
